For little ones that are learning to play baseball, batting practice is key. That’s why having a kids batting tee is so important – because before little ones learn to hit a moving ball, it’s often easier for them to learn to hit one that’s standing still, especially when they are young.
This Batting Tee by ESPN allows kids to learn to make contact with the ball while looking at the ball and not at the actual tee because the ball hangs instead of sits. Instead of setting a ball on top of a tee, the ball hangs from a string and is attached with velcro.
In addition to allowing kids to get batting practice, this kids batting tee comes with a mechanical arm that will automatically load the balls. It also has a small speaker that plays ESPN music and “chatters” – to get kids used to concentrating on their swing even with background noise.
The ESPN Batting Tee is a great concept and kids love to play with it, but there are a few minor issues. First, since it’s a relatively reasonably priced toy, we’ve noticed that the mechanical arm doesn’t always work as well as it should – meaning that users often have to attach the ball to the toy themselves. Second, the velcro is extremely strong at first…which is mostly a good thing because it means that it’s made well. However, it also makes it more difficult to hit the ball hard enough to unattach it from the velcro at first. We’d suggest attaching and unattaching a ball multiple times to wear the velcro down a bit. Your child will be able to hit balls off easier, giving them a greater sense of accomplishment and cause less irritation.
The Kids Batting Tee by ESPN will run you about $50 and we think it’s a pretty good buy. The mechanical arm could work better, but it does a good job for the price.
