For the most part, I’ve avoided all of the computers for kids, believing that there are plenty of educational games available via software for my own computer and online games that my kids can play.

However, recently a friend sent my daughter the Fisher Price Fun 2 Learn computer for kids, and I’m officially hooked. I’ve got a 5-year old, who is slightly behind where she should be when it comes to things like letter recognition. She also has a slight speech delay, so I’m always looking for ways that I can help her to get caught up. I probably would not have bought this computer for her myself, but since it was a gift, I figured we’d hook it up and give it a try.

After a week of use, I’m hooked, and so is my daughter! Here’s what I love about this computer for kids:

- It utilizes her name throughout the program. Every time the computer is turned on, it allows you to enter a new user name or select from the names on the list. Once you’ve set up a user, that childs name appears often throughout the games, helping kids to recognize their name.

- The keyboard actually works and is easy for her to navigate and use. This system comes with a keyboard that is connected to your home computer. It’s a full keyboard and also comes with a stylus and writing pad. Everything works as it’s supposed to, which was actually pretty surprising to me.

- It’s easy for small children to navigate. I’m a pretty involved parent, but I can not stand games that require me to constantly help my daughter get started. You know the kind – you think you have your child playing on their own, and then they call you again and again, because they’ve gotten stuck in the game, or ended up somewhere they don’t want to be. With this computer for kids, that’s not an issue. My 5-year old can easily navigate through the available games on her own, and doesn’t require constant intervention from me.

- High quality games. I love that there are a number of games to choose from. I also like that they are both fun and educational and that they actually keep her attention for more than 2 minutes, and with my daughter, that’s pretty hard to do!

- The additional software available on this computer for kids is a big selling point as well. It comes with one game preloaded, but there are currently about five other games on the market, so if your child gets bored with the one they have or you just want something different, there are some options for other games.

- It teaches writing! The system comes with laminated alphabet and number cards, which can be placed on the writing pad. Kids can use the stylus to trace the letters. I really like that the letter cards are laminted, so they’re sturdier than plain paper would be. We’ve actually been using the letter cards for lots of other things when we aren’t playing the computer. My daughter, who doesn’t seem to enjoy anything that looks like it might relate to learning, will look for letters on those cards for hours! I guess it works since it’s part of a game…

The only pitfall that I found with this kids computer is that it’s not compatible with a Mac – and we’re a big Mac family. Luckily, we do have one PC in the house, so she’s able to use it.

Overall, I’m thrilled with the Fisher Price Fun 2 Learn computer and think it does a great job of making learning fun and easy for younger children!
