I love wooden baby rattles. My youngest stopped being a baby a few years ago, but I’ve saved some of my favorite rattles because I can’t bear to get rid of them – I dream of my grand babies some day playing with them.

If it’s possible, I love wooden baby rattles even more today than I did a few years ago, because now I also realize that they’re eco friendly.

Without further ado, here’s our take on the best wooden baby rattles and why we like them:

Duck Rattle
Wonderworld Dudy Shake Rattle Toy
Price: $10.97
Age: Babies
4 Star Rating

Sassy Earth Brights Wooden Spring Bouquet: I love this rattle because it’s part of an eco friendly line by Sassy, called Earth Brights. My kids used to have lots of Sassy baby toys…long before they made “green toys.” This particular rattle is at the top of the list because it’s easy for babies to hold, the leaves and flowers are perfect for chewing on, and it makes fun noises when the leaves click together. At under $8, we love the price too.

Another wooded baby rattle we love is the Wonderworld Dudy Shake Rattle. I mean, seriously, does it get any cuter than this duck rattle? It’s actually part wood, part fabric and it’s perfect for babies. The wood ring makes it easy to hold and the bright colors on the duck will keep babies attention. The rattle has both black and white and primary colors – great for babies whose vision is developing. The heads, hands, and feet of the duck are all great for chewing on. And, if all that isn’t enough, the hands – wing, whatever, crinkle when played with.

Snail Rattle

Snail Slider Grasping Toy
Price: $9.95
Age: Babies

Melissa and Doug Snail Slider: Okay, I’ll admit, it’s not the most exciting wooden baby rattle in the world, but I love Melissa and Doug, and it’s actually pretty fun to play with. Honestly, I’m not sure it’s actually a real rattle…it doesn’t really “rattle,” but it is the perfect size for babies to hold and it has a ball attached that babies can slide around. I think it’s the purple color that draws me in, but it seems to work for babies too. Plus, at under $7, can you really resist it?

Flowery Ring Rattle

I’ve talked about the German company, Haba, a time or two before. I really like them because of their eco friendly approach to toy making.  Their products are all great, and the Blossom Rattle is no exception. Just looking at this wooden baby rattle makes me happy. It’s so….sunny and smiley. What I really like about this rattle though, is that the exterior (which is fabric) can actually be removed for washing. As you likely know, it’s not wise to get wood wet – it expands or something – so washing the wood/fabric toys can get a little difficult. Plus, the petals of the flowers are perfect for chewing on. And, did I mention that this rattle is two-faced? Yep, sure is! On the other side of the sunny rattle is the sleepy rattle – it features a sleeping face and blue flower petals. It’s a little more expensive at about $14, but it’s worth every penny and will last forever.

The only all-wood rattle on my list, the Kit Kat Rattle is also the most eco friendly. I like this one because it sort of reminds me of something my parents probably played with as babies.  On top of that, it’s completely organic – the wood is all natural, the coloring is made from vegetable dyes,  it’s completely non-toxic – even the packaging is completely recycled. On top of that,  even though it looks like something from the 50’s – it’s really fun for babies to play with. You don’t have to worry about your baby putting it into their mouth.

There you have it – my top 5 favorite wooden baby rattles. There are actually plenty more out there – most of them made by the same companies listed above.  You’ll really enjoy the durability of wood and will also know that your baby is playing with a toy that’s safe and eco friendly.  Because they look so high quality, they also make great baby shower gifts.
